*****Due by January 9: Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Several state and national awards of $1,000 and more to be awarded. Criteria includes academics, school/community service, leadership, honors/awards, financial need and essay.

*****Due by February 1: Tom Steele SD Memorial Scholarship 30 $1,250 scholarships will be awarded for 2009-2010 to outstanding students planning to enroll in a full-time undergrad course of study at an accredited 2 or 4 year college/u/or tech institute in SD. *****Seniors should enroll in the Wells Fargo CollegeSTEPS program and receive college prep information, planning tips, and eligible seniors are automatically entered for a chance to win one of the 20 $1000 college tuition prizes through the CollegeSTEPS Scholarship Sweepstakes. *****January 6 is the deadline for the Feb.7 ACT Assessment

***** ACT national test date: Saturday, Dec 13. Take your admission sheet (know where you will be testing, what room, etc.), photo ID, #2 pencils and a working calculator. Listen to a weather station that serves the town you will be testing in if the weather worsens.

*****Student athletes considering competing at the college/university level at NCAA institutions: Those students interested in attending a Division I or II college/university and participating in varsity athletics need to register in advance with the NCAA clearinghouse and submit a transcript along with paying the associated registration fees. The ACT scores must be sent from the testing agency using code 9999. Test scores that appear on a high school transcript will not be accepted. (When you register for ACTs, you may request scores be sent directly to NCAA. If you take ACTs and then decide to register with the Clearinghouse, you will need to contact ACT, pay an additional fee, and instruct to which institutions(s) ACT scores need to be sent.). If you are a sophomore or junior considering competition at the post secondary NCAA level, be checking the CORE high school courses that you need to complete by high school graduation.

*****Feb. 17 is the application deadline for the Monsanto Company 2009 Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program. $1,500 college scholarships are available for 100 farm youth pursuing careers in agriculture. Information and application available at www.monsanto.com www.nafb.com

*****Happy Holiday’s from Presentation College! We have moved our Scholarship Day this year to Monday, January 19. So if any student is interested in Presentation College please make sure they have their application, transcripts and ACT score sent to us by Jan. 1 so we can review it and see if they are eligible for Scholarship Day. Students must have a 23 ACT or a 3.25 GPA to be invited to compete. Just for being invited and attending eligible students are guaranteed a minimum $500 scholarship. Students also have the chance to compete and win full (plus housing), half and quarter tuition scholarships. We have also added two new four year bachelor degrees this year, Sports Administration and Psychology! We have also made our Surgical Technology a Certificate then the student can complete the Associate Degree on-line after the completion of the Certificate *****Presentation College Junior Visit Day is going to be Friday, April 17. So if there are any Juniors interested in the College this is a great time to come visit campus and meet with faculty members.
*****The Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience, or INSPIRE, is a multi-tiered project for students and their parents or legal guardians.Applications are now being accepted for INSPIRE's online community from students in the 9th to 12th grades through December 31. NASA's mission provides the content for the online community. Resources, activities and educational modules add relevancy to courses being taught in high school. Activities include participation in video teleconferences with NASA scientists, design competitions, and learning modules. The online community allows students to interact with other students with similar interests, to ask questions and to share knowledge, thus building a Community of Practice. The online community will also offer support for parents to help them better champion their student's goals. Once selected for the online community, students will be invited to compete for the unique grade appropriate summer experiences ranging from a 1 day VIP tour and workshops, a 2 week on-campus collegiate experience, and paid summer internships.Participating students must be in grades 9-12 or in their freshman year of college. ****Prudential Spirit of Community Award: Due by Wed, Oct 29 Middle and High School Students are eligible to complete to be selected as a local school nominee. You are encouraged to apply if you have distinguished yourselves through volunteer work in the school and community over the past year. The online application form is available at www.prudential.com/spirit (access key: spirit) The forms needs to be completed online, printed out, signed and submitted as complete. The school's top volunteer will then advance to further competition and be eligible to win an award of $1,000 or more and a trip with a parent to Washington, D.C next spring.
****Seniors: Due to Mrs. Witt by Thurs, October 30. Applications are now being accepted for one DHS senior to be selected as the Principal's Leadership nominee to advance to national competition. Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000 will be awarded to 100 outstanding seniors from all 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico. Criteria include leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. Interested students are to complete the nomination form online and give a copy to Mrs Witt for local selection purposes. ****Seniors: For those of you interested in competing in athletics at the post secondary level and will be sending information to the NCAA Clearinghouse, you also need to have your ACT scores sent directly to the Clearinghouse from ACT. The Clearinghouse code that you put on your ACT request form is 9999.
*****Health Happenings & Scrubs Camp at USD, Vermillion: Tues, Nov 11, 8:30 AM-3 PM. Information provided by USD includes that the event is coordinated and sponsored by USD Admissions, Sanford Medical Center & the SD Dept of Ed. Held at the new, state-of-the art Lee Medical Building on campus of USD. This event is for high school students interested in health careers and is designed to showcase and promote health science career opportunities. Throughout the day, students will have the opportunity to listen to and interact with professionals representing many health career fields and disciplines. The program includes keynote addresses, opportunities to attend up to 4 breakout sessions on health science areas of student interest, and academic fair featuring USD health science faculty, and tours of USD. *****SENIORS: Applications are now available online through February 2, 2009 for the selection of this year's BURGER KING Scholars. There will be a number of $1,000 awards given to be used for educational expenses during the 1st year at a college/university/tech institute. Academics, service to school and community along with employment are considered in the judging criteria. *****SDSU-Brookings: TGIF program (Fridays--November 7, 21; Dec 5, 12; Jan 23, 30; Feb 6, 20, 27; March 6, 20, 27; April 3, 17, 24) gives students a chance to spend the day on campus, talk with SDSU faculty and students, tour campus and residence halls. During the program students receive information on academic planning, housing, financial aid, the admissions process and more. Students are to pre-register a recommended 2 weeks in advance. I hope the information you gained will be helpful making future plans and that you all enjoy the rewards of asking so many good questions at the Career Expo. This year is an election year so many of the legislators are running for office, they may want to keep that in mind because they may be a little harder to catch up with. *****Wendy's Heisman senior scholar/athlete program: changes in the process of selecting a male and female Heisman school representative now permit any senior that has participated in at least one school-sponsored sport and has a minimum 3.0 "B" average GPA to apply online. If you are interested in applying to be named the DHS male or Female candidate (to then enter SD state competition), you may apply online at www.wendysheisman.com Please complete this process by Thursday, Sept. 18  (different due date/time from promotional materials due to local screening needs) and notify Mrs Witt that you have entered. Include her name with your online application as the screening individual from DHS.

*****Seniors:  Oct. 30 is the deadline for the Horatio Alger Scholarship application.  You must be a full time high school senior with plans to enter college in the US in the fall.  Minimum GPA of 2.0 , Community involvement and financial need.  Students must submit an online application at www.horatiolager.org/scholarships  Students must submit one letter of support and download the certification page to mail.

 SENIORS:  Seniors received their Educational Opportunities in SD  booklets that provide information on each educational facility in SD and some out-of state 1–800 and web sites.  It is a good resource to share with parents since it has a cost comparison page and majors available in school.

 Due Oct. 1st   Wendy’s High School Heisman can be accessed at www.wendysheisman.com.  Application must be verified by a school official.  It would be best to have it ready to check by Sept. 18 or 20th since the early bird may get a free Wendy’s Gift card.  

Due Oct. 31st.  If you’ve made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C.next May—by applying for Prudential Spirit of Community Award!  Consider that you should have at least 100 volunteer hours that can be verified.  Visit www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential, click on the “Apply Now” link, and follow the on-screen instructions.  Students in grades 5-12 may complete an application.

Due Dec. 1st:  The South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation announces the availability of scholarship to applicants whose parents are members of South Dakota Farmers Union.  Eligible HS seniors who will be freshmen at a post-secondary institution and those currently in their freshman year of post-secondary school may apply.  Post-secondary school need not be and in-state school.  There are two at $500 each and one for $300 to be awarded. 

The LearningExpressLibrary.com  electronic resource site is again available through the SD State Library.  Teachers some updated registration information today and will get everyone registered soon.  If you need help sooner let me know since there wasn’t a deadline to get registered.  The resource provides practice ACT, SAT, Vocabulary/Reading/ Writing, Courses, magazines, books, career info and much more.  With a library card number parents and other SD citizens can access this information.  They can get a card by going to http://www.sdstatelibrary.com and clicking on How Do I?  get a card.

Due Oct. 30:  The 2008 Horatio Alger Scholarship seeks to assist student who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society.  Student must intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree, have 2.0 GPA or higher, be involved in co-curricular and community service activities and a US citizen.  The online application can be found at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships   and remember to leave time for getting  the certifications page completed properly.  You will need a copy of the front page of parents federal tax return.

Testing Information and Preparation

ACT:  This standardized test used for admissions by colleges is designed to assess high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work.  The tests cover four skill areas; English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning.  Scores for each section are averaged to create a composite score.  A perfect score on the ACT Assessment is 36.  Contact your high school counselor for test dates, locations, and study materials to familiarize yourself with test content and questions, or call the ACT information line at (310) 337-1000

ACT Assessment

SAT:   The SAT is one of two standardized tests used by colleges as part of their admissions criteria.  The SAT I is a three-hour exam that measures verbal and math reasoning skills used for admission.  Scores on each section range from 200-800 points.  The SAT II consists of more than 20 subject areas, or achievement tests designed to measure subject-area knowledge.  Contact your high school counselor for test dates, locations, and study guides, or call Educational Testing Service for general SAT information at (609) 771-7600.

PSAT:  The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test) is a two-part, exam that is very similar to the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test).  The PSAT consists of two 25-minute verbal sections, two 25-minute math sections, and one 30-minute writing skills section.  Most people take the PSAT in the fall of their junior year in high school.  Some students take it their during their sophomore year.  Scores on the PSAT are used to determine National Merit Scholars, students who qualify for merit-based scholarships distributed throughout the United States.  Talk to your high school counselor for more information or call the PSAT information line at (609) 771-7070.
